St Andrew Farmer Killed Over-$100

St Andrew Farmer Killed Over-$100

Reports are that on Monday, the remote village was jolted when an argument over $100 led to the death of St Andrew farmer Johnoy Walker, 26. Reports from the Constant Spring police are that about 9:27 a.m., Walker, otherwise called 'Teedi', got into an altercation with another man when a knife was brought into play. It is said that Walker was subsequently stabbed. He was then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other man has since turned himself in to the police. The horrific events will forever be etched in the memories of residents of Westphalia in east rural St Andrew and surrounding communities.

"Dem tings here nuh happen round here, enuh. A years now. We work from Sunday to Sunday and everyone live good. Teedi nuh give trouble and the next youth quiet. Mi never see him a work though, but mi know say both a dem born and grow here suh and even go di same schools," a resident said.

As she sat along the roadway just footsteps away from where her son took his final breath, Viviene Grant, 63, said she remains in disbelief.

"A piece a weakness take mi when mi hear, mi foot get weak same time. Mi can't believe Teedi dead. A mi and him alone live. Mi see him yesterday (Monday) and him hot up the rice in the pot and leave. Mi can't believe him dead," she said as tears pour down her face.

Grant said her son attended church services with her for the first time in years on Sunday, January 1. But she saw what she thought was a bad omen.

"Mi tell him to put on him clothes and come church Sunday morning. Mi see one bird fly suh inna di church and mi say to Ms Daphne say something gonna go wrong and something bad a go happen," she said. Grant said she was told that her son and his alleged killer were gambling last Saturday night when a dispute over $100 got physical. But she stated that residents only told her about this after his death.

"Him had a kerchief tie 'round him head but mi never know say a cut him have because the youth chop him on Saturday night," she said. A woman said she witnessed the deadly fight on Monday while on her way to fasting service.

"Mi and a gentleman stand up a talk and mi see Teedi going up, the other guy coming down. Teedi say to him 'My youth gimmi mi tings nuh. My youth mi nuh like how yuh a gwan, enuh'," she said. The woman claimed that the other man brandished a knife. Walker defended himself by hitting the man with his cutlass.

"Mi stand up and say 'What is this?'," she said. The woman said Walker lost his balance and fell, and the two men began tussling on the ground. She said a man tried unsuccessfully to break up the dispute.

"Teedi got up and jump on the bank a try escape the other guy but the other guy jump on him and the two a dem flick down the bank. Mi nah hear any scream or anything and for a few we can't see anyone a come up. Likkle after mi see di next guy a come up with a knife and him clothes blood up," she said.
