Trelawny in shock following killing Of three

HAGUE SETTLEMENT, Trelawny — The killing of three men during a clash with police and soldiers from the Operation Resilience II team, during an illegal party in this part of western Jamaica during the wee hours of Saturday morning, has left residents shell-shocked.

A member of the Jamaica Defence Force team was shot and injured during the confrontation.

According to acting commander of the Trelawny Police Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police Winston Milton, about 2:00 am a joint police/military team which was in the area came under gunfire from individuals who were in attendance at the party, while it was in full swing.

The security personnel responded with gunfire and when the exchange ended, four men, including a soldier, were shot.

DSP Milton also disclosed that illegal firearms were seized during the operation.

He added that a number of residents were also taken into custody "on reasonable suspicion" so as to assist a probe by members of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

"Members of [the] police and military team, acting under Operation Resilience II, were on patrol in the area when they were shot at by criminal gunmen at an illegal party. Four persons were injured, three fatally. One member of the JDF received gunshot injury in the community," DSP Milton told the Jamaica Observer.

He, however, did not reveal the number of firearms seized, noting that an investigation was in progress.

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang described the incident as "a reflection of the level of organised gangsterism that is out there that the police have to deal with".

"All were heavily armed. The three who were impacted died with their arms," Dr Chang said. "The police need to be commended. It took high-quality intelligence, good police work to identify these kind criminals that we have out there."

The police did not release the identity of the deceased but a grief-stricken Tamara Mitchell said one of the deceased was her son, Oshane Surgeon, also called "Primenta".

She said her son was not involved in any criminal activities, pointing out that he is a chef who always cooks at parties in and around the community.

"I got a phone call from work that my son is dead. He was a loving person. He was a chef and he cooked for everybody. When them have party, is him dem call. Is a quiet little boy; him have manners. If him pass you 10 times, him call to you. Dem kill mi baby," she wailed.

Members of the Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) were at the scene early Saturday morning probing the incident.

"We are currently investigating the circumstances under which three men were shot and injured by the police here in Hague. A soldier of the JDF was also shot and injured," Errol Chattoo, director of complaints at the Western Regional Office of INDECOM, told the Sunday Observer.

A number of curious onlookers who swarmed the area behind the police yellow tape were tight-lipped about the incident. Some were, however, spotted talking in hushed tones.

In June of 2010 the Housing Agency of Jamaica Limited, in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Urban Development Corporation, relocated over 100 families who were occupying lands known as Dump, in Falmouth, to Hague Settlement.

This relocation exercise became necessary to facilitate developments in the town for the accommodation of a new cruise ship pier.

Zuckerberg Loses $71 Billion in Net Worth biggest loss

Mark Zuckerberg Facebook founder is having a bad year ofter losing $71 billion.

Zuckerberg Loses $71 Billion in Net Worth biggest loss

The CEO of Meta Platforms Inc. saw his fortune cut in half and then some. He lost $71 billion according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He’s now ranked at his lowest spot since 2014. He’s now behind three Waltons and two members of the Koch family.

Not long ago, 38-year-old Zuckerberg was worth $106 billion and among an elite group of global billionaires — top 5 in the world.
However, after Zuckerberg introduced Meta and changed the company’s name from Facebook Inc, everything has been going poorly.

In February, Meta revealed no growth in monthly Facebook users.

This triggered a historic collapse in its stock price. Zuckerberg lost $31 billion overnight.

It’s one of the biggest one-day declines in wealth ever.

More on this story:

Other issues include Instagram’s bet on Reels — its answer to TikTok’s short-form video platform — even though it’s worth less in advertising revenue, while the industry overall has been affected by lower marketing spending due to concerns over an economic slowdown.

The stock is also being dragged down by the company’s investments in the metaverse, said Laura Martin, senior internet analyst at Needham & Co. Zuckerberg has said he expects the project will lose “significant” amounts of money in the next three to five years.

In the meantime, Meta “has to get these users back from TikTok,” said Martin. It’s also hampered by “excessive regulatory scrutiny and intervention,” she said.

The Menlo Park, California-based company is faring worse in 2022 than most of its FAANG peers. It’s down about 57% this year, far more than the declines of 14% for Apple Inc., 26% for Amazon.com Inc. and 29% for Google parent Alphabet Inc. Meta is even narrowing the gap in 2022 losses with Netflix Inc., which is down about 60%.

If not for its endeavour into virtual reality, the social media giant “would be more in line with where Alphabet is,” said Mandeep Singh, technology analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. Meta could circumvent this issue by spinning off some of its other businesses, like WhatsApp or Instagram, he said.

MONTEGO-BAY, Jamaica --- A police search for a wanted man bore more fruits than expected on Tuesday morning when they not only found him but also found several high-powered weapons.

Savannah Daisley ch@rg€d with allegedly-R@ping 14-Year-Old Boy Four Times

July/2/2022

45-year-old wealthy horse heiress has been charged with allegedly raping a 14-year-old boy.

Savannah Daisley was charged Monday with having sex with the teenager four times on May 20th, 2021, in her home. Authorities say Daisley spoke to the victim over the phone and admitted to kissing him but claims she does not remember engaging in sex acts with him. It is unclear how she initially met the boy.

In a recent social media post, Daisley celebrated over 200 days of sobriety, disclosing that she’d had a drinking problem. In a recorded conversation with a police officer, the mother of two alluded to being intoxicated during the assault.

“I thought we had placed this in a little box and thrown it deep into the sea,” she reportedly said on the tape.

On Tuesday, the founder of Smart Cleanse and daughter of famed horse breeder Ross Daisley appeared in Waverley Local Court in Sydney, Australia. Judge Jaqueline Milledge denied her bond, despite her wealthy father offering $10,000 for her release. She will remain behind bars for at least a month until her next court appearance on August 2nd. Police have also granted an apprehended violence order to the victim.

Daisley used her fortune to jumpstart Smart Cleanse in 2014, a 14-day weight loss program. She has also authored two books about health and wellness. Daisley has not yet entered a plea, but her attorney, Pierre de Dassel, expects her to plead not guilty to the charges. He says the claims against her were made out of pure spite.

“There is motivation around the timing of it that really affects the credibility and strength of the case,” Dassel stated.

Singer Justin Bieber has revealed he is suffering from facial paralysis after cancelling shows this week.

The 28-year-old said in an Instagram video that the condition is due to a diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

He had been due to play in Washington DC and Toronto earlier this week, with concerts also planned in New York and Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

According to the Mayo Clinic in the US: "In addition to the painful shingles rash, Ramsay Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear."

The Mayo Clinic says that for most people, the symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome are temporary, but can become permanent.

The inability for patients to close one eyelid can also cause eye pain and blurred vision, the organisation says, adding that it is most common in people over 60 years old.

In March, the singer's wife, Hailey Bieber, was admitted to hospital due to a blood clot in her brain.

She later said she had suffered a stroke and had undergone surgery to close a hole in her heart.

Covering the Courts

A woman who reportedly broke into the premises of the father of her child and injured him with a knife and a bottle after she allegedly saw a woman performing oral sex on him is to be sentenced in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

The court heard that Tamara Brown, 34, of Franklin Town in Kingston, used a knife to cut the complainant on his hand thrice and also used a Stone's ginger wine bottle to hit him in his forehead.

The court heard that on October 14, about 10:30 pm, the 58-year-old complainant was inside his sleeping quarter at a golden age home, where he works as an administrator, when Brown came there and threw stones at the house, hitting out a louvre.

Brown then pushed her hand through the window and opened the door. She then went inside the house and attacked the complainant, who later reported the matter to the police.

When Brown was cautioned, she reportedly said: “Officer, mi go a mi baby fada yard and see a woman a s... him h... so me use a stone and beat the window and use me hand and open the door and go in.”

Last Thursday when Brown appeared in court she pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, but claimed that the complainant had also assaulted her.

“Him hit me in my head with a heavy iron,” she told Parish Judge Andrea Collins before denying breaking into the complainant's premises.

“So how did you get inside?” Judge Collins, asked.

“ Maam, after him open the door,” she replied, but the judge told her that that she did not have to go inside as he did not invite her inside.

“After him open the door a girl came out,” Brown added, which prompted the judge to ask her if she and the complainant were still involved, to which she replied 'no'.

“So why is that your business if a girl come out of his house? You shouldn't even bother to mention it,” Judge Collins told Brown.

The judge, however, ordered that the burglary charge be withdrawn.

According to Brown, she went to the complainant's home to collect something for her child.

The complainant, for his part, told the court that he would like to be compensated for the damage that was done to his window and speaker box.

In the end, the judge ordered then both to go to mediation and set the matter for mention in January of next year. Brown's bail was extended.

Judge tells woman she must have enjoyed the beating

The judge told a woman who was beaten with a piece of stick by her lover that she must have enjoyed the beating, after the woman told the court that she had not ended the relationship.

The woman appeared in court last Thursday after reporting that her lover, Dwayne Dunbar, had assaulted her.

The court heard that on October 20 Dunbar went to the home of the complainant, who was said to be his ex-girlfriend, and demanded her phone.

She reportedly refused and he used a piece of stick to beat her all over her body, forcing her to give in and hand over her phone.

The matter was reported and Dunbar was arrested and charged with robbery with violence.

“Did you beat up this lady?” Judge Collins asked Dunbar when he appeared in court last Thursday.

“Yes miss, mi and her have a fight,” he answered. “A mi girlfriend and everything…”

“No. Ex-girlfriend,” the judge said.

“ Things happen and we have forgotten it,” Dunbar said further.

The judge then turned to the complainant and asked: “Is he correct?”

The complainant in response said they were still together.

“You must have enjoyed the beating,” Judge Collins then told her.

“I am just wondering why you would want to remain in a relationship with anyone who beats you?” she added.

She then asked them if they wanted to go to mediation and they agreed, hence Dunbar's bail was extended for him to return to court on January 6, next year.

Robber claims he snatched chain to restart business

A young man who grabbed a woman's gold chain from around her neck claimed he was stealing the chain to get money to restart his selling business, which crashed after Metropolitan police seized his goods.

Jadeal Smikle, 19, was arrested and charged with larceny from the person after he stole the piece of jewellery from around the woman's neck in downtown Kingston and ran.

However, he was seen by a policeman who chased and held him.

Last Thursday when he appeared in court he pleaded guilty to the charge, claiming he had fallen on hard times and was trying to find a way out.

“Mi use to sell merino and underpants downtown and the Metro police dem take away mi goods, so mi do it so me can get back a start,” Smikle told the court.

Judge Collins, after listening to him, told him: “It's just about Christmas and I can't keep people like you out on the streets.”

He was remanded for sentencing on October 23.

Husband accuses wife of stealing his $700

A woman was hauled before the court for reportedly stealing $700 from her husband and destroying his gas compressor.

The court heard that the accused, Patricia Walcott, used a knife to stab the gas compressor several times following an argument with her husband at their home. The mechanical device cost Canadian $175.

The court also heard that Walcott stole $700 that was left by her husband inside their house.

Walcott, however, pleaded not guilty to simple larceny and malicious destruction of property.

Judge Collins, after hearing the allegations asked the complainant what currency was the money in, sparking laughter from the court.

“Jamaican dollars,” the complainant answered.

“Seven hundred Jamaican dollars” you must really be on bad terms,” she then remarked.

Walcott was subsequently offered $80,000 bail. Her case was also sent to mediation.
