Two young children are dead and their mother suffered major injuries after two family pit bulls attacked a five-month-old baby and a two-year-old girl at their West Tennessee home.
The mauling took place outside of the family's home on Thursday, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office reported.
Kirstie Bennard, 30, suffered critical injuries when she tried to intervene in the attack on her 5-month-old boy, Hollace Dean, and 2-year-old girl, Lilly Jane, the police said.
The mother, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition, was later reported to have stabilised, according to authorities.
The dogs – two pit bulls that belonged to the family – were euthanised at Memphis Animal Services Thursday.
The incident remains under investigation.
