Mary Ann Bevan Won The "Ugliest" Woman In The World Contest

When her husband died and was left without a breadwinner, Mary Ann Bevan decided to enter a contest and won the offensive title of "ugliest woman in the world" and was hired by a circus. She endured the ridicule of others in order to raise her childrens and give them a better life.

Mary Ann Bevan was born December 20, 1874  Plaistow, Newham, London, England.

Mary Ann webster was one of the eighth children in her family in Plaistow, East London. She later became a nurse and married to Thomas Bevan in 1902, with whom she has four children. Her husband Thomas Bevan died suddenly in 1914.

Mary Ann Bevan started experience the symptoms of Acromegaly soon after she was married, at the age of 32. She began suffer from abnormal growth and facial distortion, which lead to "weirdly" appearance, along with fading of eyesight and severe headaches. After the death of her husband she no longer had the income to provide for herself and her four children. Bevan decided to entered an "ugliest woman" contest which won.

She was hired by Sam Gumpertz to appear in coney island's Dreamland sideshow, a form of freak show, where she spent most of her remaining life. She also made appearance for the Ringling brothers circus until her death.
